Synopsis

The Cases of Judge Bao is a detective story collection in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the earliest of all Chinese detective fictions as well as the earliest in the world, which can be called the originator of the world detective fiction. The Cases of Judge Bao is made up of three volumes, namely Leungtu Cases containing 100 cases, Baichia Cases another 100 cases and Five Rats Creating a Havoc in Dongking still another seven cases, altogether 208 stories (including one introduction of Judge Bao’s life story) with over 370,000 words in Chinese. This present English version of The Selected Cases of Judge Bao (including 100 cases with 200,000 words approximately) is from the first volume. In the process of translation, the translator tried every possible means to adopt the adapted translation strategy to achieve a better readability and facilitate the reading for the target readers.

Author Biography

Fu Wang, Guangdong Polytechnic Normal University

Wang Fu, associate professor in Guangdong Polytechnic Normal University, got his master’s degree majoring in Translation and Interpretation of Advanced English, doctor’s degree in comparative literature and world literature. He finished his postdoctoral research in translation studies. In scientific research, he published over twenty papers and two mornograghs. In literary translation, he published the Chinese version of A Complete Story of Sherword Anderson (including five short story collections, with 689,000 words in total), with the Chinese version of A Complete Story of Eudora Welty (including four short story collections, with 500,000 words approximately) to be published.
