Synopsis

This anthology transcends linguistic and cultural boundaries, presenting a curated selection of masterpieces by Japan's haiku luminaries—Matsuo Bashō, Yosa Buson, Kobayashi Issa, and others—in tri-lingual format (English-Japanese-Chinese). Through meticulous translation and annotations, the collection preserves the essential 5-7-5 syllabic rhythm and seasonal references (kigo) of traditional haiku while enhancing accessibility for contemporary readers, revitalizing Eastern aesthetics in a global context.
Each poem is accompanied by explanatory notes that illuminate its Zen philosophy, nature-inspired wisdom, and poignant humanity. Whether for Japanese learners, poetry enthusiasts, or scholars of Eastern thought, this volume unveils the art of haiku where "the momentary becomes eternal." More than a benchmark of literary translation, it serves as a bridge connecting Eastern and Western poetic sensibilities.
